If for any reason a child cannot participate in an activity
or lesson (e.g. swimming) a note must be received from the parent. The school
should be notified if a child/parent is unable to attend a pre-arranged session
such as a meeting with the Guidance Officer.
All of the school programmes are ongoing in nature and therefore
students need to be in attendance unless a valid reason for absence exists.
The school cannot guarantee to provide students with back-up work to cover absences,
though teachers are anxious to help where valid reasons exist. Obviously the
teacher will also attempt to give individual assistance when the child returns
to school. However, this may cause some pressures on the child and/or the teacher.
Reasons for all absences must be communicated to the school.
It is preferable to contact the school on the day of the absence either by email, phone,
fax or a written note. Should it be known in advance that an absence is absolutely
essential, the teacher should be advised and action taken to ensure that the
student is catered for during the period away from school. Notification of absence
should be done in all cases. This information is recorded on the school database as part of an Education Queensland requirement. If it is to be for more than one day then the notification
should include estimated number of days to be absent. Where a child is absent
for three days or more without appropriate reasons, then the school will notify
the parents and request an explanation. Parents are requested to ensure that
their children do attend regularly as significant absences will interfere with
the child's education. At times, for frequent unexplained absences, the school
may notify the Department of Child Safety.
