HOMEWORK

Consistent application to school work, regular homework and study are necessary to increase chances of a student to be successful.  New homework guidelines for Queensland state schools will help children establish a balanced lifestyle that allows time for activities with family friends. The guidelines provide our school with the chance to develop our own homework policy in consultation with parents, to ensure a common-sense framework for students, teachers and parents.  The homework guidelines for different age groups are as follows -

  • Homework in Years 1,2&3 could be up to - but generally not more than - an hour each week
  • Homework in Years 4&5 could be up to - but generally not more than - 2-3 hours per week
  • Homework in Years 6&7 could be up to - but generally not more than - 3-4 hours each week

For our younger students, it is important that parents are involved by reading books to them and encouraging them in a range of activities.  For older students, parents can help them balance the amount of time spent completing homework, watching television, playing sport and doing part-time work.  Good communication between teachers, students and parents is also very important to ensure students reach their full potential.  All students in Years 4-7 should have a homework notebook/diary which parents should inspect regularly.  Parents can assist their children by encouraging them at all times, making sure they have a pleasant place to work;  by checking their written work and showing interest in it;  by discussing the school day and by encouraging the importance of consistent efforts.  Homework given by the teachers is related to current student work.  Students by Year Seven should be considered responsible for their own learning and be encouraged to include a study period within the time set aside for homework.  Longer term assignments such as projects will have set due dates.  Students also need to plan for the completion of such assignments.

Each teacher will have their own expectations as to the type of homework to be completed which may be given daily or weekly.  If difficulties arise with the completion of homework please contact the class teachers.  Failure to complete homework satisfactorily may result in students being asked to complete the work at times during the school day.
