  • developing main ideas:- descriptions of characters, settings and events (adverbs and adjectives)

MATHS

 

Extend knowledge of numbers to 9999.

Introduce ‘tenths’ & decimals.

Introduce mixed numbers (10 eighths= 1 and 2 eighths)

Investigate equivalent fractions & placing on number lines.

Language of fractions (numerator/denominator)

Extend multiplication to 1 digit by up to 3 digits (with trading)- mental strategies and formal algorithm.

Multiplication facts – up to 12 x 12

Extend commutative property of multiplication and division to learn division facts, and knows 4√32 is entered as 32 ÷ 4 on calculator.

Extend subtraction with zeros and trading (500 – 278 =?)

Identifying angles in the environment (right, acute, obtuse)

Simple equations with double digit numbers eg. 24= @- 5.

Patterning numbers to 9999

Think multiplication to solve division facts.

Spatial language to describe features (perpendicular, angle, edge, base, face, vertex, parallel etc)

Investigate flip, slide and turn (¼ , ½, ¾, 1 full turn)

Extend symmetry and tessellations.

Using measuring instruments – jugs, area grids, tape measures and scales.

Compares the attributes of shapes and objects- length, volume, mass.

Introduce 24 hour time.

Reading analogue clocks – all times.

Extend calendar use.

Reading and constructing a variety of graphs – picture graphs, one way tables, data point/dot frequency charts.

Language  of chance –more likely, less likely, equally likely & “one in four chance”

Represents a problem with appropriate number operation- choosing the correct operation to solve a problem.

Explains their reasoning to solve problems.

Investigate alternate methods of solving problems.

  • Queensland rules, local government responsibilities, e.g. waste disposal, parks

  • Students select an election figure (formal/informal, political, sporting chairperson, school captain, student councillor, etc)
  • Brief history
  • Previous experience, criteria, voting process
  • Past events to be listed in chronological order to inform the election process
Oral presentation Prepare and present interview in pairs. One student takes on role of interviewer and one of elected figure.
